Request For: Pro and College Football
Request Title: QB running effectiveness
Description As requested by Andy that QB rushing effectiveness be submitted as a separate request.
I think that the sim discounts QB running effectiveness/Rs ability by far too much. I have had too many QBs with Rs levels that are suitable for an RB who just never gain realistic (IMO) yardage when running. The sim also does not select QB running plays very often when they are entered in a package - the only way I found to make it work was to have options with in-play alteration set to 1.
I think treating QB running ability the same as a TB or FB would be a big improvement (maybe like a TB is Sp>6 and like a FB if =<6). Of less importance would be to allow QB runs specifically and set a % situation setting just like FB runs. I would also love for it to factor Rs into the determination if a QB should scramble. I'm not sure what Rs you would give Mahomes or Mayfield but they seem to me to fit the Rs=4 of the sim's prototype QB and they certainly use their legs regularly and to good effect.
To address the fact that defenses can't adjust in game, I think that the sim could 'know' when a package has QB runs and also what a QB's run tendency is for the season, and automatically assign a spy (LB not in coverage or SS) when a D would logically do so.

Clemson's QB this season was
63 C.Hughes QB Jr 6 7 8 10 3 1 3 1 17
He had 37 runs that were not sacks - I removed almost all of the options and dedicated QB runs after game 7 when his productivity was not worth the Rst penalty. If we assume each sack lost 6 yds on average then his avg run gain was around 3.4 ypc. If I had a TB with those attributes and that low of production with the OL I had this season at Clemson, I would assume his intangibles were about the worst I have ever seen and then some.
This is not realistic.
